Accelerated Reader Program
What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
Accelerated Reader is a reading comprehension program which is designed to encourage students to read books at an optimum level for advancement, based on their Star Reading tested level. The book level helps students choose the appropriate books for their reading range. After reading the book, the student takes a quiz on that book The quiz results provide instant feedback on the student's understanding and progress.
How do students use AR?
Students are tested quarterly and receive a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) range. This range determines the level of books the student should read to improve reading and comprehension skills.
Can students read books which are not in their ZPD range?
Absolutely! Reading for pure enjoyment is always beneficial. It is recommended that students do not take quizzes above their range. As a student increases his/her comprehension skills, their range moves up. Therefore, it is best to take quizzes in their ZPD each quarter. It is not recommended for students to take quizzes below their ZPD as there is very little challenge and they do no improve their reading skills.
The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program provides teachers and children with a fun and exciting way to promote reading at home and in the classroom. A wide variety of books are marked with stickers in the St. Elizabeth Library to indicate that they are AR books. Students may read AR books and take the associated quizzes to earn points toward milestone incentives, such as pencils, candy bars, erasers, pizza parties and, ultimately an invitation to the monthly AR Breakfast in the school library. The kids love to watch their progress and teachers often involve the students in setting AR point goals for the year.
Reading levels for students are determined by the administration of a computer reading diagnosis test called The Star Reading Test. Students in grades 2-8 take this test 5 times each school year. (Beginning of the school year, after the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd report periods, and end of the school year) First graders take their first Star Reading test at the end of the school year.
